Welcome to the Sunshine State (of Mind)
Perth is one of the sunniest cities in the world, averaging over 8 hours of sunshine per day across the year. But the weather here has its own rhythm that can catch newcomers off guard — especially if you're coming from the east coast.
The Seasons
Summer (December–February)
Hot and dry. Expect temperatures between 30-40°C, with occasional heatwaves pushing above 40°C for several days. The saving grace is the Fremantle Doctor — a reliable afternoon sea breeze that rolls in around 2-3pm and drops the temperature significantly.
Autumn (March–May)
The best time to be in Perth. Warm days (25-30°C), cool evenings, and virtually no rain. Many locals consider this the city's peak season.
Winter (June–August)
Mild by Australian standards. Daytime temperatures hover around 17-20°C, with overnight lows around 8-10°C. Rain is concentrated in winter — June and July are the wettest months. You'll want a warm jacket for evenings, but snow is unheard of.
Spring (September–November)
Wildflower season. Temperatures climb from 20°C to 30°C, and the countryside explodes with colour. It's also when the rain tapers off and outdoor events kick into gear.
The Fremantle Doctor
This is perhaps Perth's most famous weather phenomenon. A strong sea breeze that blows in from the southwest every afternoon during summer, it can drop the temperature by 10-15°C in minutes. Locals plan their days around it — outdoor activities in the morning, beach or indoors during the heat, then back outside when the Doctor arrives.
