A 40-year-old man has been killed while riding his bike on North Lake Road in Bibra Lake. A vehicle hit him before dawn on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, and the driver did not stop.
Police say the cyclist was struck at about 5.20am near Sobek Pass, in Perth's southern suburbs. He died at the scene. Police say the driver is still at large. Major Crash investigators spent the morning at the site, and the bike was still lying on the road hours later.
What happened
North Lake Road is a busy four-lane road. A separated bike path runs beside its southbound lanes. The ABC reports that the man was hit on the other side of the road, in the northbound lanes, in the left-turn lane into Sobek Pass.
The ABC was also told that members of the public stopped to help the man after the crash. Police have released no description of the vehicle, and they have not named the man.
The driver's failure to stop means the case is being treated as a hit-and-run. In WA, a driver involved in a crash where someone is hurt or killed must stop, give help and report it to police.
Road closures and traffic
The crash shut one of the main links between Cockburn and the Kwinana Freeway for most of the morning peak. At 7.43am, Main Roads WA's Perth traffic account reported North Lake Road closed in both directions between Phoenix Road and Discovery Drive. It told motorists to find another way around, and traffic was heavy on the approaches.
Police officers stayed at the scene through the morning to direct traffic around the taped-off section of road. Drivers heading to the freeway, Murdoch or the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct were sent onto other routes.
Several other crashes slowed the network across Perth on the same morning. Main Roads reported a crash on Albany Highway at Bentley and another on the Mitchell Freeway exit to Burns Beach Road at Joondalup.
The appeal
Investigators want to hear from anyone who saw the crash, or who was driving on North Lake Road around Bibra Lake early on Tuesday morning. They particularly want dash cam footage that may show the vehicle before or after the collision.

Several outlets covered the crash on Tuesday morning, including ABC News, PerthNow and The West Australian. PerthNow posted the news on X at 8.54am.
Why it matters
The Cockburn area's big arterial roads are a daily commute for many Perth cyclists. That is especially true early in the morning, before the traffic peaks. Separated paths such as the one beside North Lake Road are meant to keep riders away from fast traffic. But anyone crossing or turning at a side street still has to share the road.

Everything Perth will update this story when police release more details about the vehicle or the investigation.
