If you heard loud booms across the Perth CBD on Saturday night and wondered what was going on, it was Diwali. The Indian Society of WA's Diwali Mela at Langley Park finished its first night with fireworks over the Swan River, and it's on again on Sunday.
The bangs were heard well beyond the city. One local in Bassendean said they were loud there too, and a dog owner said their pets went "mental". One CBD resident said the celebration seems to get bigger and louder every year.
Sunday's details
The Diwali Mela, Festival of India runs from 3pm to 9pm on Sunday 1 November 2026 at Langley Park. Entry is free.
The Indian Society of WA has promoted fireworks at 8.30pm on both nights. There are also live performances, traditional dance, Indian food, market stalls, henna, face painting, carnival rides and an outdoor cinema.
If you have a dog that's scared of fireworks, plan to keep it inside around 8.30pm on Sunday, especially if you live near the river.
