Five people are in police custody after a man was shot in the leg in the early hours of Wednesday at Moonyoonooka, a rural locality about 14 kilometres east of Geraldton. The shooting led to a police operation across the city's eastern fringe that ran all morning.
Police were called to a report of a firearm incident on Allen Road at about 12.50am on 30 September 2026. They found a 32-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his leg. St John WA took him to Geraldton Regional Hospital at about 1am. Police say his injuries are serious but not life-threatening.
A morning-long search
Police sent a large number of officers to the area, including the Tactical Response Group, and asked the public to stay away. 10 News Perth reported that "significant resources" had been deployed, and several outlets described the area as being in lockdown while officers searched for the people involved.
At about 10.30am, roughly nine and a half hours after the first call, five people were taken into custody at a property on Hart Street in Utakarra, a suburb on Geraldton's eastern side. Police say all five are assisting with inquiries. No charges had been announced by Wednesday evening.
Forensic officers spent the day at the Allen Road property and at the Hart Street address, where they examined more than a dozen vehicles.
What police have said
Mid West-Gascoyne Acting Superintendent Ben Huggett told the ABC the investigation was at an early stage.
"By all accounts, we're dealing with a genuine firearm." — Acting Superintendent Ben Huggett, WA Police
Some earlier reports said the man had been hit by pellets. Police have not recovered the weapon. They say the injured man and the alleged shooter know each other, but they have not described the relationship. Police believe at least three people were involved in the shooting itself.
Police have not given a motive. They have not said whether the shooting was drug-related, and they have not confirmed any links to outlaw motorcycle gangs. The injured man is cooperating with investigators.

What happens next
The priority for detectives is finding the gun and working out what part, if any, each of the five people played. Police will decide whether to lay charges once those inquiries are finished. If anyone is charged, they are likely to appear first in Geraldton Magistrates Court.
Anyone who was near Allen Road in Moonyoonooka or Hart Street in Utakarra overnight or on Wednesday morning, or who has dashcam or CCTV footage, is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report online.
Why it matters
Violent crime in Geraldton has been a running political issue. Regional MPs have repeatedly called for more police resources in the Mid West. A shooting that ends with a heavily armed police operation on the edge of the state's biggest regional city on the Mid West coast is likely to add to that debate. Police are keen to stress that they believe the incident was targeted, not random.
