Where Perth families go trick-or-treating on Halloween

From Stuart Street in Maylands to Elstree Avenue in Menora, these are the streets locals say go all out on Halloween night.

Halloween might not be as big in Perth as it is in the US, but some suburbs go all out. A Maylands parent hoping to take their four-year-old out early tonight, Saturday 31 October, asked locals where to go, and the suggestions came in fast.

Streets locals recommend

  • Stuart Street, Maylands: the go-to in the inner north-east. One local warned that hundreds, maybe thousands, of people walk it, which can overwhelm little ones.
  • Elstree Avenue, Menora and Coolbinia: described as "insane". Arrive around 4pm to beat the crowds.
  • Browning Street, Yokine: lots of houses within walking distance, with a busy but more manageable crowd for small kids.
  • Cygnet and Lyndhurst streets and Donald Square, Bayswater: Bayswater "goes hard", one local said.
  • Buxton Street, Mount Hawthorn and streets near the Inglewood IGA.
  • Willis Street, Victoria Park: one of several Vic Park streets where houses dress up. Parking gets bad if you come late.
  • Bassendean and Darlington: both known for well-organised community events, with neighbours donating lollies to one street.
  • Joel Terrace, East Perth: a few houses decorate, including one that dresses up the council tree on the corner of Gardiner Street.

Tips for little trick-or-treaters

  • Go early. Streets are calmer before dark, and that's when younger kids have the most fun.
  • Only knock where a house is decorated. It's the accepted sign that the household is taking part.
  • Local community Facebook groups often post maps of participating houses.
  • Shopping centres run their own Halloween events, which can be easier with toddlers.

Some locals argued the real fun is doing a lap of your own streets and meeting the neighbours. Others said Halloween in Perth is now "massively celebrated" and nobody really frowns on it anymore.
