The Martu people are the traditional owners of a vast stretch of the Western Desert in WA, including the Great Sandy, Little Sandy and Gibson Deserts. Many Martu families remained living a traditional desert life well into the 1960s, with some only making first contact with non-Aboriginal Australians in 1977.
